China travel app login and verification checklist before you fly

A recovery-first setup guide for phone numbers, email, passwords, passport checks, bank approval, and a clean sign-in rehearsal.

Short answer

Before flying, confirm that every critical China travel app can be opened again with the phone number, email, password, passport, and bank card you will actually carry. Keep your home number reachable for security messages, record official support routes, and save the first-day itinerary offline so one failed login does not stop the trip.

Use it during the trip

Works without signal

Save before you go

Run a short no-signal rehearsal instead of assuming every app is ready.

  • Open downloaded maps or language tools in airplane mode.
  • Save the exact Chinese hotel and station names.
  • Keep account recovery and itinerary access independent of one phone.

Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.

Emergency numbers in China

Call only for a real emergency. Say the exact location first; ask nearby staff to help communicate when safe.

Map each account to its recovery route

Do not treat an app icon as proof that the account is recoverable. For payment, ride, rail, airline, and hotel tools, identify the sign-in identifier and the channel used for security checks before leaving home.

  • Write down whether the account uses your overseas number, email address, Apple or Google sign-in, or a separate username.
  • Keep the overseas SIM or eSIM active if it receives one-time codes from the app, bank, or email provider.
  • Confirm that your password manager and recovery email can be opened on the travel phone without another unavailable device.
  • Save only official support pages or in-app help routes; never store card security codes or full passwords in the itinerary folder.

Finish identity and card checks on a familiar network

Current official visitor guidance says Alipay and WeChat registration can use a foreign or Chinese mobile number, while card binding can require issuer verification. Complete any passport, face, card, billing-address, or one-time-password prompt while you can still contact the issuer and receive messages.

  • Enter passport names and numbers exactly as the service requests instead of changing the spelling to force acceptance.
  • After linking a card, distinguish a completed setup from an authorized merchant payment; the issuer and merchant still participate in the live transaction.
  • For 12306, finish passenger identity verification before a busy booking day and keep the original booking passport available.
  • Treat the app's current agreement, prompts, and support response as authoritative for supported cards, limits, and account checks.

Run a clean sign-in rehearsal

Test recovery without deleting the only working session. First confirm that recovery details are current, then use a browser, secondary device, or an app's own account-security screen to verify the documented sign-in route.

  • Restart the travel phone and confirm that payment, map, translation, ride, rail, airline, and hotel tools still open.
  • Switch from home Wi-Fi to the mobile connection you expect to use and check that time-sensitive messages arrive.
  • Open a saved destination, reach a sample ride or booking screen, and verify that the intended card or passenger profile appears without placing an order.
  • Do not sign out of the sole working account merely to test it unless the recovery path has already been confirmed.

Give the first day an account-free fallback

A recoverable account can still be delayed by a network, identity review, issuer check, or product-specific restriction. Prepare the arrival route so the first hotel and next booking remain reachable without a fresh login.

  • Save the hotel name, address, phone number, airport or station route, and booking reference in English and Chinese.
  • Keep a physical bank card, some RMB cash, and a second independent payment route.
  • Save airline, railway, accommodation, card-issuer, and insurer contacts with international dialing codes.
  • Tell a travel companion where the non-sensitive offline itinerary is stored without sharing passwords or payment credentials.

Before you rely on this answer

China travel rules and app behavior can change by city, route, account, passport, airline, and local inspection practice. Treat this page as a traveler-friendly starting point, then verify official or provider details before booking or packing anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Should I log out of China travel apps before flying to test the password?

Not if it is your only working session. Confirm recovery details first, then test the documented sign-in route in a browser, on a secondary device, or through the app's account-security screen without destroying the sole working session.

Can Alipay and WeChat use an overseas phone number?

Current State Council guidance says registration can use a foreign or Chinese mobile number. Individual features can still apply separate identity, card, location, or phone requirements, so test the actual travel flow.

Should I keep my home SIM active in China?

Keep it reachable if it receives security messages for apps, email, or banking. Check roaming charges and your dual-SIM setup before travel, and do not cancel the number tied to critical recovery paths.

What account details are safe to save offline?

Save usernames or masked account hints, official support routes, booking references, and recovery steps. Do not store full passwords, one-time codes, card security codes, or passport images in an unprotected shared itinerary.
