How to set up Didi for China travel before arrival

A visitor-first setup guide for phone access, international cards, exact pickup points, Chinese destinations, and ride backups.

Short answer

Before relying on Didi in China, install the current Didi-Greater China app or confirm the ride-hailing entry you will use in Alipay or WeChat, register with a reachable phone number, add a supported payment method, allow location only as needed, and rehearse a real pickup-to-destination search without placing an unwanted order. Save the destination in Chinese and keep a staffed taxi or public-transport backup.

Use it during the trip

Works without signal

Save before you go

Run a short no-signal rehearsal instead of assuming every app is ready.

  • Open downloaded maps or language tools in airplane mode.
  • Save the exact Chinese hotel and station names.
  • Keep account recovery and itinerary access independent of one phone.

Printing this page also keeps the guide answer and visible source links with this checklist.

Emergency numbers in China

Call only for a real emergency. Say the exact location first; ask nearby staff to help communicate when safe.

Choose one documented visitor route

The State Council's 2025 visitor guide lists three online ride-hailing paths: Alipay, WeChat, and Didi-Greater China. It says Didi-Greater China supports registration with foreign mobile phone numbers and international credit cards, but a successful registration still does not guarantee every card, vehicle type, location, or live request will be available.

  • Download the current official listing or use the ride-hailing entry already available inside your tested wallet.
  • Register with a number that can still receive account or driver communication during the trip.
  • Add a supported payment method and keep another wallet, physical card, or RMB cash for a separate journey fallback.
  • Do not share SMS codes, wallet passwords, or full card details with a driver or unofficial helper.

Rehearse pickup and destination search

Official visitor guidance tells passengers to confirm both the pickup location and destination. A phone's blue location dot is only a starting estimate, so test the workflow with the exact terminal, station exit, hotel entrance, or venue gate you expect to use.

  • Save the provider-confirmed Chinese destination name and full address before opening the ride screen.
  • Compare the pickup pin with signs, road level, terminal number, gate, and any designated ride-hailing zone.
  • Review the displayed vehicle type, estimated wait, and live fare information without confirming an unwanted request.
  • Keep a screenshot or bilingual address card that can be shown to staffed transport help or a licensed taxi driver.

Prepare communication without depending on a call

A driver may need to clarify the pickup. Keep the registered number reachable when possible and learn the app's current in-app messaging or translation route, but do not assume a voice call, automatic translation, or roaming connection will always work.

  • Save a short Chinese message naming the terminal, exit, road side, or visible landmark.
  • Keep the vehicle plate, color, and live order status on screen before approaching a car.
  • Use only the contact and safety controls shown in the official live order.
  • Move to a staffed, well-lit pickup area if the location is unclear or you feel unsafe.

Keep the first ride replaceable

Do not make one app request the only way out of an airport or railway station. Save the official taxi rank, airport or station transport desk, public-transport route, and accommodation contact before arrival, then follow the live app terms for cancellation, fees, payment, or support.

Before you rely on this answer

China travel rules and app behavior can change by city, route, account, passport, airline, and local inspection practice. Treat this page as a traveler-friendly starting point, then verify official or provider details before booking or packing anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Can tourists register for Didi with a foreign phone number?

The State Council's 2025 visitor guide says Didi-Greater China supports foreign mobile phone numbers and international credit cards. Test your exact number, card, and current app flow before the trip because live requirements can change.

Can I use Alipay or WeChat instead of installing Didi?

Current official visitor guidance lists ride-hailing entry points in both Alipay and WeChat as well as Didi-Greater China. Use the route you can sign into, communicate through, and pay with reliably.

Should I place a test Didi order before arrival?

Do not create an unwanted ride. Rehearse sign-in, location, destination search, vehicle choices, communication controls, and the payment screen as far as the app safely allows without confirming a request.

What should I save for an airport Didi pickup?

Save the terminal, arrival level, designated ride-hailing zone, exact Chinese destination, accommodation contact, and an official taxi or public-transport fallback. Recheck current airport signs after landing.
